a review of Beer Wars Live and an update on tomorrow's pub crawl. Some beers are objectively better than other beers. Experienced beer drinkers, the beer geeks, unanimously agree that craft beer is better than macro-swill, even macro-swill that tries to pass itself off as "craft". If real craft beer is better than macro-swill, why don't the macro-swill producers (who seem to have the capital and technology to do it) make good beer instead of crap?

It's another road trip. Mike and I head down to the Blue Point Brewery in Patchogue with our cask of Royal Mild. We attended the fourth annual Long Island Real Ale Festival. The beer was great and I talked with a lot of people: Bernie Kilkelly, Dave of Bellport Beers, the eponymous Paul Brown famous for having a beer on tap at the Brickhouse named after him, and Dean from Deks. We did a brief "sober-up" tailgate at the train station with water and sandwiches courtesy of Rich.

2008 is the year where I'm only drinking homebrewed beer at home. That means that if I drink beer at my house, it has to be beer that I made or beer that my friends have made. A few weeks ago, Mike and I had a huge, super brewday. We made 36 gallons of beer. That beer is fermented and it's time to put it into the keg. Today, I take you through all the steps necessary to get the beer from the fermenter into the serving keg.

The Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale was tapped just after 6 pm on Friday, January 11, 2008. It was a resounding success. We'll also be talking about the hops shortage and what that will mean for local beer prices.
